• Maryland Window Tint Exemption Laws

  Maryland's medical window tint exemption is authorized under Transportation Article §22-406(i)(4) and administered by the Automotive Safety Enforcement Division (ASED) of the Maryland State Police. Individuals who must be protected from the sun for medical reasons can receive certification from licensed physicians and legally install darker window tint below the standard 35% VLT requirement.

  • The exemption allows window tint with light transmittance less than the 35% normally required on regulated windows.
  • A Maryland-licensed physician or optometrist must certify your medical need using Form MSP ASED 23-04B.
  • Exemption certificates are valid for up to 2 years as determined by your physician.
  • Starting October 1, 2025: If your physician determines your condition is permanent, your certification will be valid indefinitely (per HB 436/SB 707).
  • The approved medical exemption must be kept inside the vehicle at all times for review by a police officer.
  • Windshield tinting is permitted only above the AS-1 line or within 5 inches from the top, this restriction applies even with a medical exemption.
  • Red, yellow, and amber tint colors are prohibited. Reflective or mirrored films are not allowed.
  • Another person may operate your vehicle even when you are not present, as long as the written certification is in the vehicle.
  • Qualifying conditions include any medical condition requiring protection from the sun, including lupus, skin cancer, xeroderma pigmentosum, porphyria, albinism, Cockayne syndrome, Bloom syndrome, and solar urticaria.
• Documents You'll Need

  To apply for a medical window tint exemption in Maryland, you'll need:

  • Form MSP ASED 23-04B (Physician's Written Certification for Window Tint), completed and signed by a licensed medical professional
  • Vehicle information including year, make, model, and VIN

  The Medical Certification must be completed by one of the following:

  • Physician licensed to practice medicine in Maryland
  • Optometrist licensed in Maryland

  Note: Unlike some states, Maryland does not require pre-approval before tinting. Once you have your physician's certification, you can have your windows tinted and must carry the certification in your vehicle at all times.

• Legal Tint Limits

  Maryland law requires a minimum of 35% light transmittance (VLT) on regulated windows. However, with an approved medical exemption, you can legally install darker tint below 35% VLT, protecting both your health and ensuring compliance with Maryland law.

  Standard Maryland Tint Limits (Without Exemption):

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint allowed only on top 5 inches (AS-1 line). No tint below this line.
  • Front Side Windows: Must allow at least 35% VLT.
  • Back Side Windows (Sedans): Must allow at least 35% VLT.
  • Back Side Windows (SUVs/Vans): Any darkness permitted with dual side mirrors.
  • Rear Window (Sedans): Must allow at least 35% VLT.
  • Rear Window (SUVs/Vans): Any darkness permitted with dual side mirrors.
  • Reflectivity: No mirrored or metallic appearance on any window.
  • Colors: Red, yellow, and amber tints are prohibited.

  With a Medical Exemption:

  • You may install window tint with light transmittance less than the 35% VLT requirement on front side windows, rear side windows, and rear window.
  • Windshield restriction still applies: tint only permitted above AS-1 line or within 5 inches from the top—even with a medical exemption.
  • Your physician determines the appropriate tint level based on your medical need.
  • Color and reflectivity restrictions still apply (no red, yellow, amber, or mirrored films).
  • Exemption covers sedans, SUVs, vans, and other registered vehicles.
