• Arizona Window Tint Exemption Laws

  Arizona's medical window tint exemption is authorized under Arizona Revised Statute § 28-959.01 and administered by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). Individuals with medical conditions requiring protection from direct sunlight can apply for an exemption.

  • The exemption allows darker tint on side and rear windows beyond the standard 33% VLT requirement.
  • The exemption does NOT apply to the windshield below the AS-1 line.
  • The exemption covers vehicles you own AND vehicles in which you are a regular passenger.
  • A medical professional must certify that eye protective devices will not provide adequate protection.

• Documents You'll Need

  To apply for a medical window tint exemption in Arizona, you'll need:

  • Completed Application for Window Tint Medical Exemption (Form 40-1511)
  • Medical Professional Certification section completed and signed
  • Your driver's license or ID number
  • Vehicle information (VIN, year, make, model) for each vehicle

  The Medical Professional Certification must include:

  • Confirmation that the applicant has a medical condition requiring shielding from direct sunlight
  • Statement that eye protective devices will not provide adequate protection
  • Medical professional's name, license number, and contact information
  • Signature and date

  The Medical Professional Certification must be signed by one of the following:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
  • Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
  • Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD)
  • Ophthalmologist

• Legal Tint Limits

  Arizona law sets specific limits on how dark your vehicle windows can be tinted. With an approved medical exemption, you can exceed standard limits on side and rear windows.

  Standard Arizona Tint Limits (Without Exemption):

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint allowed only above the AS-1 line or on the top 5 inches.
  • Front Side Windows: Must allow at least 33% VLT (±3% tolerance).
  • Rear Side Windows: Any darkness permitted.
  • Rear Window: Any darkness permitted (dual side mirrors required if view is obstructed).
  • Reflectivity: Maximum 35% (±3% tolerance).
  • Colors: Red and amber tints are prohibited.

  With a Medical Exemption:

  • Front side windows may be tinted darker than 33% VLT.
  • The exemption allows you to "alter the color or reduce the light transmitted through the side or rear windows."
  • Windshield below AS-1 line remains prohibited even with exemption.
  • Your physician determines appropriate tint level based on your medical condition.
